Musk left South Africa at age 17 to attend Queen's University in Ontario, Canada. X.com eventually merged with Confinity to become PayPal, which revolutionized the online payments industry. eBay bought PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion, earning Musk $180 million from the sale.
